This allows Pratchett to have his cake and eat it. The brilliance of the witches as characters is their no-nonsense bathos in respect of absolutely everything. There’s even a gifted playwright, a dwarf called Hwel (sounds like Will), plagued by the fact that all inspiration in the universe hits him at once, and that he can’t find an outlet for his visions of Lauren and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin. Here, Shakespeare (especially Macbeth) is the subject, both fueling the story of usurpation, regicide and lost heirs in Lancre, and in underpinning the development of the profession of theatre in Ankh-Morpork. Discworld stories featuring the Witches tend to be among Terry Pratchett’s best, especially for the consistency of their parody.
